The Dutch Island 'Walcheren' was deliberately flooded to silence Nazi guns. In 1944 the allies bombed the dikes surrounding Walcheren to let the seawater in. Walcheren was completey flooded within days. The strategic goal was to scare of the Germans and be able to liberate the rest of the Netherlands. The consequences were enormous; the people of Walcheren had to live with the salt water for more than a year, long after the liberation of the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.
